Superman's Secret Weapon? Meet Krypto the Superdog
James Gunn’s upcoming Superman (2025) has fans buzzing- not just for its fresh take on the Man of Steel, but for the scene-stealing debut of his furry sidekick, Krypto the Superdog!
(Superman 2025- Official Teaser Trailer)
In the first teaser trailer (above), a bruised and bloodied Superman crashes into a snowy wasteland. The first word he utters? “Krypto.” Moments later, a small, scrappy terrier mix barrels through the snow at super speed, licking Superman’s face before dragging him to safety- cape and all!
It’s a surprisingly heartfelt moment that sets the tone for Gunn’s promised blend of “epic action, humour and heart.” And if early reactions are anything to go by, it’s Krypto- complete with glowing eyes and zoomies- who’s stealing the spotlight.
In the comics, Krypto shares all of Superman’s powers, from flight and super-strength to laser vision and invulnerability. But Gunn’s version is inspired by his own adopted dog, Ozu—a chaotic, once-unreachable rescue pup who, as he put it, “even ate my laptop.”
That real-life mischief made its way into the film, giving us a version of Krypto that’s powerful, unpredictable, and full of love. “How difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” Gunn mused. And thus, Krypto was born.
As Gunn tells it, Krypto isn’t your typical obedient superhero dog. He’s scrappy, chaotic, and a little rough around the edges—a not-so-good-good-boy with a heart of gold and the power to burn your house down if he gets the zoomies.
Which, frankly, makes him perfect.
With Superman releasing during “Adopt a Shelter Dog” month in the U.S. next month, Krypto’s on-screen debut feels timelier than ever. He’s a tribute to second chances, unlikely heroes, and dogs who destroy everything you love… before becoming everything you need.
Part good boy, part hurricane, this terrier mix might just be the most unexpectedly brilliant addition to the new DCU. Move over, Lex—there’s a new top dog in town.
Krypto (and some guy named Superman) hit our screens in the UK on July 11th. So be sure to check it out in cinemas!
